First, go to CS-2 ( …
First, go to CS-2 (custom menu 2) and make sure that Single Area is selected as your focus mode, otherwise the computer will be choosing which area for you.
If that doesn’t work, email me back and I’d be glad to help (though I have to add, local camera retailers are excellent resources for hands-on answers to questions like these).

omg thank you, i was searching through my manual trying to find how to change the focus area. of course it was as simple as the arrow buttons!!! i was starting to go crazy because the focus area was off to the side, i must have changed it on accident at some point!
